Jason,
Sorry I just now got to this, been out of town.
You already have the sickest marine subwoofer on the market!! The XS-XXX is the only true marine spl sub around. You will see plenty of car audio woofers used in boats and some companies even use marketing phrases like marine certified on their car audio woofers to try to gain sales in marine. But there are only a handful of purpose built marine woofers on the market and you will see most are in the 10 inch free air config.
So you already have the right woofer. And plenty of power. So you are good there.
Sounds like the issue is two fold possibly. Location and enclosure.
Where is woofer located? It sounds like under the passenger compartment.
And you mention sealed.
Number one on location. The drivers side under the dash and facing the driver is the best location in a Tige. The woofer will load the best here.
Number two on enclosure. The XXX likes the ported enclosure.
Rarely will you find a woofer that is perfect for both sealed and ported. Most are optimized for one of the other. Some like the XXX will work in both but are insane in the ported and very good in the sealed. The trade off for ease of build and install using the sealed is output. As David mentioned, take the governor off.
We tested a XXX in both a sealed and slot loaded ported box in one of our guys hatch back cars. It was a 4 door hatchback. The XXX hit very good in the sealed. When we put the slot loaded box in. It hit so hard it rattled his spoiler off the car.
The two enclosures in the manual are designed for ease of install. The triangle port is a sealed box with an extra piece of wood making the port. So this box is as easy to build as the sealed. But we had many customers wanting the ultimate enclosure. So we put up the specs for the slot loaded box that Hydrotunes designed for the RZ4 demo boat. This box is bigger but fits most Tiges under the drivers side.
The new RZ2 has a different dual slot loaded design that is smaller but more complex. We will be adding that to the site as well. But since you mention wanting something easier to build. Take a look at the slot loaded box.
In the new RZ2, we have two XXX. One under the drivers dash and one under the passenger compartment. We removed the trash can and installed a vent there so the woofer can load into the boat. Also, both woofers are on the same plane so there is no phase cancelation issues.
In this boat with two XXX. we have a SYN-1 per woofer so 1000 watts to each. This boat will HURT you. It hits so hard when in the water, it not only splashes water but will make the water look like it is boiling all around the hull from the bass. It was at the Austin boat show and some got to hear it. So maybe they can chime in. We had permission to play the boat for 60 seconds every hour. But it was so loud that towards the end of the show on Sat, the sheriff had enough and shut us down!
When running multiple woofers in a boat. You can run into phase cancelation issues. Which lowers the perceived output even though you are running more woofers. Also, when stepping up to a larger woofer but having to run a smaller box does not gain the output you would think. You are better off running the proper box matched to the woofer than just going to a bigger woofer. So going to a 15 inch is not the right way to go since you will have to build such a large box. So you run into fitment issues.
On your boat, i recommend building the slot loaded box. And putting it under the drivers dash. Cut the panel the shape of the box and slide the box in from the front. Then build a trim panel and attach it.
Let me know what you think and we can get you into the proper enclosure and set up. But trust me, build the ported box and put it under the drivers dash and then let us know what you think!![Rockin](https://www.tigeowners.com/core/images/smilies/headbang.gif)
