remote panel volume not working when engine on

    Hi all,

I'm a 1st time boat owner, bought a 2001 22i Tige' a couple of weeks ago. Loving it. One irritating quirk, though. I cannot adjust the volume from the driver's console remote or the transom remote when the engine is running. Quite awkward to blast it while idling just so I can hear it when accelerated. Also awkward to keep explaining to everyone why I have to keep asking them to adjust the volume from the head unit in the glove box.

I can still switch from CD to radio, skip songs, etc. Just no volume control.

I asked the previous owner about this and he said it has always been like that. He suggested to try wiring the head unit directly to the battery, bypassing the built-in wiring harness.

Anyone else experienced this, or have any suggestions on how to fix?

    Clarion XMD2 CD/radio head unit
    Clarion M101RC wired remotes
    2 Clarion amps - APA4204, APA2104
    Clarion onboard speakers and sub
    Kicker tower speakers

    Thanks in advance,
    Boone

Welcome boone! I know you have a great boat...I babied her for three seasons and put in around 300 hours behind the wheel!

The remotes would occasionally work with the engine running, but most of the time not. Boone already found out that the other functions work, which I did not know. What would cause the volume to not work with the engine running?

If this helps...I do know when engine is off the volume works on both front and transom remote, EXCEPT if the blower is on. Thats why I think that the issue is from "noise" within the factory harness. Just so you know I added an independent 6 terminal Buss fuse block when I installed the ballast. Thats why I suggested trying to wire the stereo switched power to that fuse block and see if it cures the problem.

The only thing I tried when I owned the boat was to unplug each remote plug, hu & Y harness to be sure the connections were good. I also tried each remote independently to see if one or the other was bad, but it didn't change the results.

I hope someone with more stereo / electrical experience will chime in and at least give a big Tigeowners welcome to boone.

Where you at Boone, cause ET said you where not too far a drive from him? If west, then maybe I might finally get a pull behind that boat, the previous owner never invited me

Ok, it's possible that it's a noise issue, I dont really know how the clarion send the signal for the different functions.

I would start by moving the H/U's ground to the amp's Neg, and the H/U's yellow "Memory" wire to the amp's Batt+. If that doesnt work, remove the remote's ground and pos wires for the back-light. I know, sounds strange, but I had one with an internal short and it wouldnt work with the bulb wired up.

Thanks for the welcome and tips, ET. Sounds like good advice as always.

"chpthril" sounds like Chapel Thrill, a concert at UNC-CH eons ago. If that's the case, you might get that pull. I'm in Cary, NC and I've been going to Lake Jordan on the weekends. Crowded and choppy for the most part, but big enough to find some secluded spots here and there.

Thanks for the list to try. I'll let you know how it goes.

        Cheers,
        Boone
