Kicker ZX 700.5 - started smoking today

Clarion deck was just on with volume at about 6 as we had just put the boat in the water and my daughter smelled something burning and saw smoke coming from the compartment. Opened it up and the 700.5 had smoke coming out of it pretty good! I turned off the boat and was ready to grab the extinguisher but then it stopped.

No idea what could have caused this, the stereo worked fine last weekend when I was cleaning the boat and we didn't put anything into the storage areas on that side today.

I'm guessing this won't be covered by my warranty (Tige or Kicker, I'm at 2 years and 2 months now). This sucks, I was just getting ready to buy the stuff for my ballast install.

    Timmy-

Weird, but you might still be under warranty. PM me with original date of sale info, amd be reay to photocopy a copy of your original invoice. Kicker installed in Tige at the factory has a three year warranty. Don't discount your ballast purchase yet.

If we can go through to process, and if you are original owner, with less than three years on the boat we will take are of you.

    Let me know!

      Timmy-

I should add... These amps do not fail often. We might need to do some diagnosis on the rest of the system. When these amps fail, it is for a reason. We should spend some time makign sure nothing has happened to the rest of the stereo to make sure that when you get a new amp in there that it will work, and work reliably..

        Phil,
I will call my dealer(Wakeboard & Waterski Specialty) today and see if he can take care of everything for me. I am the original owner and it is the factory install. If they can't, I will contact you with that info!

I was going to use my meter and check all of the speakers and make sure that none of them are ground out somehow but I may just have WWS do that for me.

Thank you for the good news of the day!!!!

Is there a circuit breaker or something for the stereo? I got the new amp, checked everything and it all looks good except for the fact that I can't turn on the stereo. I checked the fuses, they are good, I have power, etc. I got frustrated and left the boat down in storage because I couldn't think of anything else and then it dawned on me that there might be a circuit breaker for the accessory switch/stereo.

Also, this is the factory "power premium" option or whatever it's called, anyone know what the yellow wire is for that runs to the same terminal as B+ on the amp?

There should be a breaker back near the battery(s) for the amp. The yellow at the amp's B+ is probably the H/U's "Memory/Power" wire. This is what the H/U runs off of. If it has not B+, the head unit will not turn on. Get a volt meter on those amp wires and see if you have power and ground. Also, check for power on the small red wire going into the back of the head unit. It's a switched 12v an should be hot with key ON or in ACC.

Now, the fact that you have a yellow wire sharing the B+ lug of the amp makes me wonder if your setup was dealer installed. In every 06< tige that I have done, that yellow wire is part of Tige's factory harness and goes bact to the battery source somewhere. I've never seen a factory setup yet that had the yellow running to the amp. If it was dealer installed, it could be a breaker or fuse or nothing!

It's definitely Tige installed, my dealer went back and found the order sheet for the boat and that's why they are covering it. The wiring harness is definitely factory too, everything is in 2 bundles and has that heavy duty "factory" tape around it along with the flexloom.

I have power at the amp, I did verify that. I saw the breaker at the back of the boat but didn't see a reset switch on this one like I did on my buddy's 22Ve. The amp wire has a 60amp fuse and then 2' later it has a 100amp bus breaker. The other breaker that I am talking about looks to go between the EIDB and the battery.

If I can't find another breaker for the accessory stuff, I will just take my boat with me when I return the other amp and see if they know - there aren't that many wires here!

Interesting If you got 12V and ground at the amp(s) and the H/U yellow memory wire is drawing power from the amp's B+ lug, then that leaves either the inline fuse for the yellow wire is blown (dont know why though), the H/U's ground is disconnected (again, dont know why), or the H/U's red remote turn-on wire is not getting 12V from the key or it's inline fuse us blown ( and again, why)

Just to make sure we're talking the same thing, you mean the head unit wont come on, right? You're not just having the amps not coming on.
