    Mac Help.

I need some help with my Imac. The internet is like a craps shoot. Sometimes you can get on and it is lightening fast. Other time I can open and internet window, turn up my laptop, look up what I need to and the Imac is still waiting to load the page. I am running it wireless. It is the one the cable company provided. I remember someone saying something about using an apple wireless router. Would that help? Do they make one? Any suggestions would be greatly apprecitated.

I have probably used 10 different wireless routers over the last couple of years. Many of them will do that, and you need to restart the router. If this will fix, by turning off and on the router, it is the router. I bought an apple airport extreme, and have never had an issue since. Keep in mind I use windows, linux and macs in my office, they ALL work better on the apple airport extreme.

Usually, it's because there's a compatibility issue with your wireless router and your wireless card. I've had more luck with new multi-band wireless routers. They have more intelligence built into them and communicate better with the providers networking equipment.

Apple's Airport Extreme is an example of one that is more advanced. If your wireless router/hub if more than 2-3 years old, it may be time to replace it. Same goes for your cable modem/DSL router.

Ok I will try to restart the router. I should have mentioned as well that the router is the modem, or wait, that didn't come out right. The modem is a wireless modem. So will the airport extreme still work? And what is the story on the time capsule? I thought that was like and external hard drive or something. I don't know. Thanks for all the input.

The Time Capsule is a Wireless router with an internal hard drive that you can use for your backups. You could make it work by connecting a LAN cable from your current modem/router to a new wireless router. Just turn off the wireless portion in your existing modem/router.

MAke sure your iMac is up to date. Run Software Update from the little Apple Logo in the upper left of your screen. Maybe there is a firmware update for your modem as well?

We had this problem with our previous router as well. I think it was a Belkin router. I got the 1TB version and it has been fantastic. It backups up my MacPro, MacBookPro and MacMini, all wirelessly, and without thinking about it. It has a USB port built in as well, so you can share a printer or another external HD over your network.

You can save 17% off the retail price if you purchase it refurbished from Apple.

Ok it all makes sense now. Thanks a lot you guys. I will get the Time Capsule one. Yeah I ran the update and that didn't help any. My wife is the one getting really upset with this so hopefully this will solve the problem.

I have the airport extreme, and I just plugged a 500gb usb drive to it, and I can back up to it just like a time capsule. So you can do either way.

ok since this is a mac help thread, how about this. I am trying to help my mom with her finances. They don't make quicken home and business for Mac, just PC. anyone out there use something like this for Mac, or should I just get the program for a Mac that lets me run window programs?

                    Thanks

Im using Quicken 2005 for Mac. I would imagine they have a newer version by now?

It sounds like you've got it though.

How good is Quickbook Pro for Mac? Seems like it is for business owners. Would I be better off with the quicken for Mac? I just want to use it for personal finances.
