Hellcat was actually a fighter. Not a bad guess though Dog. I can see why you would think it was the "Dauntless" dive bomber. They have a similar type canopy.

That was going to be my next guess after your clues about not seeing combat. The built a ton of these things...I want to say they are actually made out of wood.
