Bikini Shopping: "See How Backwards You Are?"

When my daughter was 14, I got a call from my 85 year old dad to pick up my 81 year old Aunt Mary at Mines Field.
Mines is old school aviation talk for LA Airport (LAX).

Aunt Mary lives in Murano Italy. Speaks teriffic english & a sense of humor and character that is off the hook. Everyone loves Aunt Mary.

Near LAX is (was?) the most fantastic Swim Suit shop in So Cali,, Mickeys.
So naturally my daughter came along, and we'd stop off at Mickeys as long as we're in the area after we pick up Aunt Mary.

Daughter always buys her swimsuits AFTER her first trip to the Colorado River to see what all the other girls are wearing. Get a fix on what's in style first.
"Bikinis don't even start to get good until they hit the $125.00 mark" She says.

This was when the girls wanted string bikinis that just barely covered the essential spots and I wasn't up to speed on that yet, and she knew it.

It wasn't going over very well with me when we rolled into Mickeys. I was suggesting the Tankinis that were in style too,, but my daughter never listens to me and the chill was in the air.

NFW was she wearing a Tankini to the river, and I'm going to loose this battle.

Aunt Mary stepped up to bat for my daughter, and schooled me in what a pain in the azz I am,, and how important clothes are to girls.

"So what if it's a little naughty?
Girls want to be noticed, and with nice cloths on the boys will talk to her."

"You want grandchildren don't you?" - In her sweet accent.
Old school, old world, Euro philosopy.

Oh brother,, I opted out my opinions,, and my daughter with Aunt Mary's help picked out some nice swim suits for her.
Though very skimpy, I lump'd it.

My wife is Swiss, a whole different culture, and this kinda modesty issue doesn't register with her at all. She thinks my views are from another planet.

The next year my daughter visited Venice with Aunt Mary, and a few boys working the shops and restaurants would ocassionally reconize her from the boating forums.

"See how backwards you are?" - Aunt Mary wrote me.

Today my daughter is a wardrobe designer for a movie studio and gets all her bikinis for free from most the MFG's.

Nope. I'd have sent Aunt Mary back on the plane with a 9-1/2 size footprint on her azz!! There is exactly ZERO chance my 14 y/o would wear a "naughty" bikini. Period. My daughter is 11 now, so I'm just having this "struggle" with her. It sucks. I win though...until she gets a job
Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?

The word compromise is a big drink of water.
If my daughter went to waterparks, the beach or to friends pool parties it was her one piece diving swimsuit and she went with that.

On the boat and at the pool she could wear a bikini that is far far more modest than what the girls wear today.

I think Aunt Mary just made her comments to gain my daughters confidence, then Aunt mary stear'd her toward something more reasonable than pure butt floss.
            A good trick.

I just got my daughter back in my life after interfearing in her social life.
The past 3 years without her were the longest in my life.

She's always been a straight Ap student, polite, pretty, conscientious & helpfull, ambitious, considerate, never wanted us to spend money on her for anything she wasnt absolutely crazy about,,, and she usually earned her own money without any pressure from us.

A few years back, though I liked a boy she hung out with, his step dad was trouble.
We've all had bad impressions of people,, and this guy was creepy.

            So a compromise:
She could have her friend over on our boat, hang out with us or her other friends, but I didnt want her around the stepdad of this boy she liked.

This caused a huge rift between us,, and their is much more to the story I'll spare you.

I was right in my assessment of the step dad.
His wealthy wife died in a plane crash, and left her fortune to everybody BUT the dad.

My daughters friends mothers and fathers felt the same way about the step dad as I did, and over time this all came out, my daughter got over it,, and life is now, finally good.
I'd do it all over again,, perhaps try a different approach if that was possible.

It's hard to lose a love one like that Wake but it is great that everything worked out in the long run.

And you didn't have so say "I told you so".

Wake I have had to deal with a similar issue with my eldest. She left us for four years and married the guy she ran away with. Now she is back in our lives and we are somewhat whole again with exception being she stayed in Ft. Collins Co but she comes home a couple times a year now. You just have to let them grow and hope you taught them good values and as they grow and deal with life they remember the lessons.

Oh and she divorced the degenerate
