Must see Video of Near Plane Crash

    http://www.reuters.com/article/rbssI...80793520080303

BERLIN, March 3 (Reuters) - German airline Lufthansa said on Monday its pilots had averted a crash at Hamburg airport after a strong gust of wind caused a plane, with 130 passengers on board, to veer dangerously on landing.

Amateur video footage, played repeatedly on German television, showed the Airbus A320 buffeted by crosswinds and driving rain as it landed on Saturday at Fuhlsbuettel airport near the northern German port city.

The plane approached the asphalt runway at an odd angle, then swerved sharply before touching down, with one of its wings scraping the ground. The pilots averted disaster by quickly taking off again, going into a so-called go-around manoeuvre.

"Just before landing, the plane was hit by a very strong gust of wind that led to the left wing touching the ground very briefly," said Juergen Raps, Lufthansa executive vice president of operations.

"The pilots reacted outstandingly by inducing a go-around."

No passengers or crew were injured and the plane, which had taken off from Munich, circled for about 10 minutes before landing safely on another runway.

Gale force winds caused chaos in Germany and other central European countries over the weekend, killing several people and causing power cuts as well as major travel disruption.

Flights across Germany were cancelled, diverted or delayed. (Reporting by Reuters Television, Writing by Madeline Chambers; Editing by Elizabeth Piper)

Lufthansa has some of the best trained pilots in the world. They also have the most qualified forensic crash experts in the world. They're involved with analyzing most major airline crashes. All that info feeds right back into their training programs.

I've flown in the cockpit (with Lufthansa) with similar landing conditions, except it was windshear. It's kinda scary when they come in expecting to drop a few hundred feet and then it doesn't happen and you're past the middle of the runway. They don't even break a sweat and go around for another pass like it's nothing.

BTW, the guys in the video were wondering if the pilots sh** their pants...I bet not.

Wow that was some approach and landing. That jet was crabbing into the wind all the way to the point where they staightened out and the windshear pushed the left wing down. A fantastic recover by those pilots.

I have seen that video about 4 times now and I am still amazed at how well the pilot did. I am no pilot of an airplane but he did an awesome job. Probably should get a huge bonus this year, ya think????....

I think several people on that flight probably had to change their underwear upon arrival....

You'd be surprised how often planes land that way when there's only 1 runway. It used to be this way in Austin before we got the new airport. The runway was short too and American used to land DC-10s here. Things got exciting every once in a while with our unpredictable weather.

thats why my bar tab is a $100 bucks before i get on a plane. it takes alot of liquid courage for me to get on those dam planes. if i was on that one it would dam sure be my last. i can not even imagine the fear runnning through that plane.
