Matt and Spharis, you guys do great work. I am getting ready to buy my son the Adobe Master Suit for school. He is into the Web Graphics and all that kind of stuff. He is all over me about our web page and how crappy it is. But what can I say I am not a pro at this stuff. Plus he want to have a good Vector Graphics program to build logos and he says Adobe has that. We can get it for $950.00 through the educational programs they offer. That is every software suit offered by Adobe. I think that is a pretty good deal considering it normally is like $3000.00.

CHP it is worth spending the money on a logo. My son built the one on our web page using paint brush and it sucks and he and I know it. I was going to pay to have it professionally done but right now is not the time to do it. Soon I hope.

Any student discounts are usually the best, take advantage of them.

Just a tip, if he is leaning towards web graphic design, and not print, you probably don't need InDesign. Also, if web, make sure he gets dreamweaver, flash, and definitely fireworks along with photoshop.

IMHO fireworks is the best web graphic program for slicing and other great web features. Its no where near as powerful as photoshop, but the web stuff is the best, and it also handles vectors really well. It is also tightly integrated with dreamweaver. Basically, when I am building a site from art, I start with templates that are used by my programmers. All photoshop and illustrator art, is brought through fireworks as its last step. So fireworks may not be the place where the graphics are created, but where they are finalized. Its a great little app.

FW for a long time was also the only app that could export png files correctly. When authoring multimedia cds, it was a necessity for either flash or director.

y, it def is the best for pngs, especially retaining vector artwork in the png. I love that little app. It really chokes on big files, but not what its meant for.

Good luck on the site and future business CHP!

We use http://www.hostgator.com/ as our web hosting company. You get a lot of bang for the buck, no problems and actual customer service. They have a helpful and informative forum as well. We used to have the Hatchling plan then upgraded to the Baby plan to take advantage of the unlimited domain use.
I also use godaddy for my domain registrations, but I don't remember any transfer fees?

Thanks, and thanks for the site, I put into my favs. Godaddy and a couple of others I looked at charger a small (like $6.99) transfer fee if you brought your domainname.com from another reg site. No real big deal tho.

The Host Gator site is twice the storage and bandwith than 1an1 for less $.

Maybe this site with godaddy.com codes will help?

I will leave the final answer to the pros.

My understanding is Linux is more widely used, more stable and less hackable.
Try this. It doesn't really answer your question, but it gives you more information.

You are asking for a war now!!!!

I am sure you will have the Microsoft people saying Windows and the Apple people saying Linux...

Both OS's have their pros and cons. The version you choose is how you feel and what you are planning to do with your website. Both OS's are very good for programming IMO.

Not a lot of help but you can get a free Microsoft Visual Studio Express Edition that will allow you to create web pages for Windows (http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/beginner/default.aspx)

I guess what I'm really asking here is : does this have any bearing on the OS I have on my PC (MS by the way) that I will use to build the site, or the OS of anyone visiting my site?

It does not have any bearing of what OS you have on your desktop computer. What is does have is what programming language you plan to program for.

Example: ASP.Net is usually Windows. While PHP is usually programmed for a Linux OS.

It really doesn't matter, since you will doing straight HTML. My preference would be linux, but you are just going to be FTPing html files, you won't notice difference.

Also, your choice doesn't lock you in. Once you start programming, you have to choose a language. But you can take your html files and move them from windows to linux or the other way at any time.
