    Finding a Web Site Host

    Hay Guys, need some help, advise, info, etc, about finding a web host. I've decided to take my stereo install "skilz" to the next level, and set up an actual business. I hope to have the very basics covered before our boat show in Feb.

    I have my domainname.com registered through GoDaddy.com, and it's currently "parked" there. I can host there or take it to another site, but do not know the first thing about what I need to look for and ask of a web site host?

    I dont think I need anything real ELABORATE in a web site, just want to keep it simple and easy.

    I want to have a company logo, info about the co and what I do, contact info, links to the products I rep, a gallery for pics of my work. I do not need "check-out" and "shopping cart" as I will not sell off my site (at this time).

    Any other suggestions would be great.

    What might be a typical price range? Do I need a certain amount of space, and if so, how do I determine my needs.

    If your trying to keep it cheap, and just those basic static pages....

    go to monstertemplates or some site like that and get a basic website template you like and just host it on godaddy for a few bucks. It will serve you fine. Things start getting more complicated when you require dynamic content and programming, but it doesn't sound like you are there yet.

      I work in this industry so there are a 100s of hosting companies. Some better than others based on your needs.

      Here is one that I use for my portfolio site and love the services and support. 1and1.com

      Take a look at the link above,the "Business Package" is about 10.00 a month. It offers a ton of services, some that you probably wont use but will be nice to have for future growth. There control panel is top notch too. Very user friendly.

      Also the webspace and bandwidth (Monthly Transfer Volume) will be way more than enough for what you are doing.

        1and1 is great, I have used them before, but they are a bit more complicated.

          What about graphic design type tools. I've got a crude logo design done but cant go any further with what ive got here. Do these sites offer stuff that I can use to do a simple logo, but looks better then something from Paint or Word?

            You could use a basic graphic program like Adobe Photoshop Elements which looks like it comes with the package. Not sure what the stipulations are though.

            But ragboy brought up a good point, it depends on what your "technical level" is. We can easily think this stuff is easy but for some it maybe greek.

              I do have Photoshop Elements 5.0, I shall look into it for more then just pics

              And yes the is Greek to me cause I've never done this.

                Your image is everything. a good site template will make you look pro, and no one will know the difference, but slap a cheap *** logo on their, and it will look crappy. Don't do it yourself. Matt's a good designer, and is a pro, I have used him on other things and would trust him, spend the few hundred dollars or so, and do the logo right. Then pick a template to go around it, and you are only out a small amount, and look good. Whatever you do, don't have your brother in law, that uses photoshop, or whatever do it for you. You know what I mean? Everyone thinks they can design, but they can't. I can't do it, but I know what looks good. I get people send me portfolios all the time that suck.

                Go with matt, you won't be dissapointed. And if you are, let me know so I can take him off my list. JK ;-)

                  That's kinda what I'm leaning towards. I don't want to spend a bundle on software that will never really pay for it's self. If I cant do what I want, for what I think is a reasonable investment of time and money, I am not above farming it out to a pro.

                    We also use 1and1.com... We've had one major issue with them (and this can happen to anyone) but they went down for a few days and it was bad for us as people thought WE went out of business... Their tech support was good though and did seem to help us as best they could... I'm getting ready to launch another site with them...

                      1and1 went down for a few days, or just your servers? that would be very bad. I have my own datacenter, and its tough staying on top of it, but never had an issue where I had anything down for more than a couple of hours.

                          Ha thanks Robert! I decided not to originally type a reply about the self designed logo since I came off sounding like an ***. By all means I am not.

                          But Robert hit that dead on (about the logo part) and no I am not inflating my ego. Here is my simple analogy on logo design. If your not an electrician would you bother fixing the electricity in your house if it did not work? Same principal goes with the logo. The image is the first thing any visitor or customer will perceive. There judgment of your image will often be followed by an instant classification of your business.

                          Mike, that logo is pretty rough man, I am putting that "lightly"

                              Unfortunately most if not all DC's will have a power outage of some type or down time, sometimes its out of the DC'c control.

                              Everyone claims 99.9 % uptime but to me that is just a number in my opinion.
