I got a Sony blu-ray BDP-S300 for free when i bought my Sony XBR at Best Buy (long story for another time), anyway i've bought a few BD discs since Xmas but always on eBay or on sale elsewhere and while the quality is great imo i'm not rushing out to buy more. I'll wait for the prices to drop now, especially since Wally World has dropped HD DVD and picked up Blu-ray.

Besides i just had the AT&T U-verse fiber optic TV service with VOIP phone installed and with over 330 channels to include 68 premiums i have yet to fire up the Blu-ray again. Oh yeah, free too! (another long story)

For those that might the U-verse is SO much better than either Dish or Direct satellite that it's unbelieveable. Seriously the SD feeds look like HD and the HD feeds are fantastic. and you don't have a sat dish so you don't get the nuances to go along with it! I highly recommend it too anyone who can get it in their area. It even looks great on a tube tv!

i dont know if this has already been said coz i couldnt be bothered to read 16 pages but anyway...

although i prefer HD DVD because it can be hacked easily, blu-ray WILL win, for one reason, PS3. The PS3 has enabled huge worldwide advertisement and promotions for Blu-ray as that is teh format that sony are using in their console. Toshiba is having a major battle against Sony to try and push HD DVD but i very much doubt they will be able to promote their product they way Sony can.

Not only that, but Toshiba already said they're dropping HD DVD. It's over...

              WAYNE, NJ - FEBRUARY 19, 2008
TOSHIBA Announces Discontinuation of HD DVD Business
Toshiba to Redirect HD DVD Investments Towards New Digital Business Strategies

Toshiba America Consumer Products, L.L.C. (“Toshiba”) today announced that it has completed a thorough review of its overall strategy for HD DVD and as a result of recent market developments, the company has decided to discontinue sales and marketing of HD DVD players. Accordingly, Toshiba will begin to cease shipments of its HD DVD products to retail channels.

”While we continue to believe HD DVD is the best format for consumers, based on its technological advancements and the value and quality inherent in our player offerings, recent market developments have led us to the decision to choose new and different paths,” said Yoshi Uchiyama, Group Vice President of Toshiba’s Digital A/V Marketing Group.

In an effort to contribute to the sound development of the audio-video market and bring the full benefits of new digital technologies to consumers, the company will shift its resources into the creation of new business strategies that leverage the vast technological resources of Toshiba.

Furthermore, Toshiba will remain committed to standard DVD business, and the company will continue to market their leading line-up of DVD players.

              Ongoing Customer Commitment
Dedicated to customer support, Toshiba will continue to provide full product support and after sales service. Customers can contact, 1-888-MY HDDVD (1-888-694-3383) for answers to general questions and operational assistance for HD DVD.

                  Loosely translated.

We and the consumer know we have a superior format. We outsold BluRay if you remove PS3 sales. BluRay sold studios on copy protection. We are out of money, bluray has deep pockets. Sorry Joe Consumer.

I'm not buying a Blu-Ray player or PS3. I've got my Apple TV now and that's my plan. I'd rather rent than buy anyway. Even at $5 a movie, it's still cheaper than $35. I never watch a movie 7 times. My kids do, but they don't need HD. DVD's good enough for them.

I'm boycotting Sony. None of the products they make really interest me anyway. Their loss. BTW, they are going to kill their own sales because they are a monopoly.

my thoughts exactly. I figure I'll just keep buying my dvd's and what not. I do watch DVD's 20-30 times, so renting isn't really for me, but if someone figures out the DRM hack for apply, then I for see an apple tv and several 1 tetrabite time capsules in the near future
