I spend about 100$ a drive in my servers, right now $100 gets me a 500GB 7200rpm SATA II drive. My data servers have 8 drives each. Since we use redundant RAID controllers, the system emails me on failures, and we can hot swap the drive without even powering down.
But all hard drives are made the same, and they die all the time, you need to be prepared for it. The best preparation i have seen is Time Machine by apple. My wife set it up on her own on her mac book pro. Its great software.
Sometimes you can get those disks restored, but its VERY expensive. They don't repair the disk, but give you the data off of it.
