But, I am sure there is a program that would meet some of my needs but having the ability to create software myself, it is rather hard to get exactly what I want from other software. I am sure you understand what I mean.
I do. You would be surprised how easy it is to develop for safari on the iphone, and you can host on your own computer, access with a bookmark.

The 3G chips to use in the phone SUCK your battery. All you have to do is turn on wifi and bluetooth on the iphone, and you see that. Turn off bluetooth and wifi, and the battery will last a couple days, not a couple hours. Also, with the frequency of wifi spots all over, you will be surprised how much you can use that over edge. Apple made a deal with all starbucks that is rolling out. The iphone will tell you, if you leave wifi on, whenever there is a net in range. I get on other nets all the time when in the city, and don't use edge, just some free wifi spot, sometimes even from mcdonalds and places like that.

I used to have to carry my laptop with me everywhere, in case of emergency, plus my ipod, and my razr. Now I only take the iphone. It does what they all did for me. I moved my ipod connection from my glove box to a mount and even listen through my car stereo like I did my ipod, with full playlist control. When the phone rings, my song fades down, and I hear the ring from the phone, I answer with my bluetooth headset. And this is with my harmon kardon add on, which was made before the iphone. This also works in my boat with my clarion head, but its still in my glove box, so I don't use it, I use an old ipod nano. But it works the same as in my car, I have tried it.

I do agree, its all relative, but apple fanboy or not, this was the product I have been waiting for for years, and it has exceeded my expectations.
I looked at one and it's much nicer than I anticipated. Having it exclusive to AT&T network is a big deal killer for me.

I'm not against it, just realistic about the fact that our wireless phone infrastructure is inferior. It's the early adopter's curse.

          your so right Dog!!

Our cell phone blows compared to Europe or the rest of the world.

But oh well. not much we can do about it. I hope they fix the things that I don't like in version 2

Sheesh, pull up your skirt and go buy one already. ;-)

There will always be better and cheaper just over the horizon. When you always wait for it, you just miss out. One thing that has been true of EVERY apple product I have owned, is they have resale value. The 3G will come out, and ATT net will support, which will probably be LATE in 2008, and I will sell this sucker and get a new one. By the way, I am 90% sure there is a 3rd party app on the phone that does MMS.

I am actually getting my daughter one for xmas. I was going to get her an ipod touch, but then I thought, 100 more, and it has the phone. Anyway, I send images to amy back and forth all the time, but we both have iphones, and apparently, from the sites above, others have been doing it no problem.

well that's good. I'll look into it for sure. I just know that when I send my brother pics and he is in the field he can't see them unitl he gets on the edge network. In CO where he is now he can't always long into the website to get them.

If these 3rd party work then I'll be getting one when I buy the new mac book pro you were talking about. Get it all at once.

x-mas is first though, gotta save up for that

Hey, do you have one of those iTV devices from Apple?

I have 3 of them. One in my living room/ent center. One in my office, and one in our gameroom converted garage. You can get them for like 229 refurbished from apple.

Man you have opened a can of worms. Now I have to tell you about my system.

First, all three AppleTVs are hacked, so that they can mount server shares, and can play AC3 Dolby Digital direct through hdmi/spdif so I get full AC3 to my receiver Denon receiver.

So here is how it works. I have a huge server in my basement, about 2 terrabytes right now. All of the dvds I own, plus netflix dvds get ripped using handbrake, to H.264, with makes them about 1.6 Gigs for a 2 hour movie, and I keep the AC3 sound as is from the DVD. Quality is outstanding, same as the DVD. I put all of these movie files on my basement server, organized, with artwork from impa movie posters or downloaded dvd art.

Once I put my movies on the server, they can be accessed from ANY of my appletvs and played, with the living room ATV using full AC3 sound and hdmi to my 50" HD plasma. It rocks.

The AppleTVs also have all of my music synced to them, automatically and playlists, and also any new tv shows or podcasts that come into itunes. My itunes on my mac shows all 3 ATVs and automatically syncs all of my music, all of my photos, and tv shows and podcasts.

In the gameroom, its awesome, because you can go in there, and turn on the tv, and go to a playlist, and its like a 21st century JukeBox. Plays the music, and shows cool animations of the album artwork and such.

The only time I use the actual DVD disc is for my HD-DVD player, but that won't be for long. I already have all I need to transcode HD-DVD/BluRay the same way I rip DVDs. The only thing that is missing is the EAC3 support. I keep informed, and compile my own, and test versions of mplayer, mencoder, and ffmpeg to get all this done, until handbrake someday supports it in the future. You can compile in EAC3 support now, but its still not that great. I would guess by the end of the year, or so, I will be ripping HD-DVDs into 720p mov files to play on ATVs.

                          Sorry, but you asked. ;-)

As you can see, I am a big geek, this is my hobby. It has actually made me income also, but that's another story....

You just cost me some money

Thanks for the info, it was very helpful. I was hoping my XBox 360/Media Center PC would do this, but now that we've all gone iPod, music's a problem. The iPod A/V connection doesn't work so well and the remote doesn't work at all.

Do you know if you can do component video/digital audio from it or is it only HDMI?

Y, I tried several media centers first, and my 360 that way, but the appletv is so seemless with itunes, where all of my media is at. Plus, only the apple TV will play your DRM'd files. Once I figured out how to get AC3 passthrough from my appletv to my receiver, it was a done deal for me.

Here is the link to the refurbished ones, they are just like new, even packaged new. If you hack to mount from server, then you don't need the big disk. Plus there is another hack to mount usb external disk.

                              http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPL...m=CertifiedMac

Be cautioned, the hacking process is not simple, you have to be pretty adept at the command line. Here is step 1 to hacking it, after this, the rest is somewhat simple.

                              http://wiki.awkwardtv.org/wiki/Patchstick/Testing

The above must be done from a mac tiger install. If you sent me a 1 gig usb key, I could copy my image to it for you.

After that, you will still have to SSH into the apple tv and configure certain things.
