Dom I didn't catch where you were asking about the BB and checking mail, but the BB is commonly used in networks that use Exchange for mail. RIM sells an enterprise plug in that allows BB phones to be used to check exchange mail from anywhere you have service (It's an IMAPtype plugin). If the office uses IMAP or POP for retrieving mail (which is highly unlikely) then the iphone will work. I do not think there is an Exchange option available for the iPhone yet. The network admin for the company will need to enable IMAP (which is unlikely), or you will need to hit the web service (if it is enabled) using a browser.

I found this on the web, and it still is the case.
I've been asking Microsoft for an official word on Exchange support for the iPhone for days now, and they finally got back to me. You see, when Walt Mossberg said "It can also handle corporate email using Microsoft's Exchange system, if your IT department cooperates by enabling a setting on the server," he was talking about IMAP support - a popular, generic email protocol that can be enabled in Exchange.

Here's the bad news: through IMAP you lose a lot, according to Microsoft. For one thing, it's 'pull' email only -- no push. (The exact phrase MS sent to me was, "Through IMAP, iPhone will have the ability to access corporate email on Exchange using basic 'pull' email.") And without Exchange ActiveSync, you don't get access to calendars and contacts or centralized device control, which is important to IT departments.
In other words, even if the admin enables IMAP, the iPhone will have to be told to check the account every so many minutes, or will need to be told to sync. Exchange can't push mail to the iPhone over IMAP. I am sure someone will come up with a solution, like they did for the Treo, that uses a desktop client app and SMS to send a message to the phone to pull the email. Nothing like that available yet. This is pretty much what the RIM plug in does, but it installs on the Exchange server itself, and not on the users desktop.

Things will start changing more next week. The true capabilities of the iphone will start debuting after leopard comes out. There are several features that are waiting for leopard to debut.

could you be more specific? what exactly do you feel in your expert opinion? I think you know more about the phone then anyone I know of.

                  Thanks.

Well, one of the things glaring, is the to dos and calandar stuff. The new mail in leopard, integrates all of this. The idea is, put your notes and todo in your mail app, since that is where you live. With tighter integration with iCal. So this will all sync with your iphone, and I am guessing they will sync this stuff with outlook as well.

This will give you a better feel for leopard, and the new mail.

ok, going to hijack my own thread, but is there an issue with buying the first version of mac stuff? ie a macpro with leopard? I mean they update and do so well on the stuff, is this really an issue?

Not really anymore. Leopard will upgrade with very little issue. When they went from os 9 to x, there were issues, it has been very smooth the last 2 major os upgrades.
