DVD to video Ipod - How to?

My audio Ipod crapped out on me. I might be sending it to TeamAllen's boy to see if he can fix it. I'll have to send him a PM with the details. Regardless, I couldn't go boating without my tunes, so I bought a new one.
The 30GB video Ipod has worked out well so far for tunes.

I cannot figure out how to get video on my video Ipod. I downloaded a stupid free program that was supposed to be very good called Jodix free Ipod video converter. I thought it would sure be nice to download Detention wakeboarding instructional video so that I can make my newbies watch it so that they can get up a little easier. I open up my newly downloaded program and it doesn't do the job, stating I needed some other codecs not included. Fine. The help tutorial says to download another codec (20MB+) called klmcodec210 and I still get the same problem.

All of this seems like a whole lot of work for something that itunes should be able to do by itself.

Regardless, I was wondering what you guys do to get DVD footage to your ipod? Help!

What a great idea! I just got an 80Gb for my birthday and just figured the video option to be something I'd never use. Now you've provided me a great use of video...although for that, I could just bring my son's portable DVD player. It's battery operated and works anywhere.

    Thanks for the great tip!

As for getting stuff on to your iPod, it's my understanding that it must be converted to QuickTime format. My Kodak Easyshare digital camera takes video in QuickTime format and we've had good success copying those onto my son's iPod video.

Note that the links in that Doc have changed, the download links below work:

This is like one of my areas of expertise. The best method, by far, is a free program called handbrake.

          Ragboy,

You seemed confident, so I tried your program first. It seems pretty idiot-proof, but I still don't see how to get the DVD to the Ipod. I do not think that handbrake is encoding properly. I enter the source and destination, and then hit encode - after about a milisecond a window pops up that says: status: the encoding process has ended. There is no file where I requested it to be in the destination? ???? What am I supposed to do then?

I am pretty sure it is not encoding because it only encodes for a millisecond, like I said. I tried messing with the various options, but nothing makes it run differently.

It does not work if I first download the file to an ISO file either.

Well, there should be decent documentation on the site. You choose the DVD, and it should pick the biggest title. Since this is technically ILLEGAL, some dvds are tougher to decrypt. They use schemes where they purposely put bad sectors on the DVD and such. I would start with an old dvd to be sure it works. Then you choose an IPOD setting for the output, and it will create the mov. You then copy to itunes and sync.

There is no output, do you mean destination? Unfortunately, there is nothing happening at the destination end of things where I expect it to be.

If I click on the video_TS files for the source (which isn't going to include the audio, BTW) then click on TOOLS, then View DVD data, at least then I see that the program has done something and there are many lines of gibberish about cells and what not. BUt still, nothing happening at the destination end of things.

              Ragboy, you have a PM.

                VideoTS does contain audio.

Handbrake is pretty much the one click standard, and so there are many guides for it. Just google "handbrake tutorial" to see a few.

                  Here is one.

Whatever I downloaded does not even have many of the menu choices listed in the tutorial. It clearly is Handbrake, but something is very much amiss. Many of the options listed in the tutorial are not available to me.

Thanks for the help, I will keep working on it. Maybe the version I downloaded is incorrect.

                      Gschmidt,

In the tutorial you referred to, the first thing it says to do is hit a button called 'read disk'. I do not have that button. I am running Windows XP. I downloaded the correct version I am sure.

Today is the last day of school here in California. I will have my son post a tutorial after he gets home.

The handbrake is version 2.25 and when you hit the help tab and then About - it gives the version and says 'This application does not decrypt commercial DVD's.'

Just giving more information. The tutorial was awesome, but applies to version 2.1

Obviously they have gone out and screwed everything up since they improved it. I'll see if I can find version 2.1 floating around out there.

lol...I got no credit for posting that tutorial/program first! Damn, you guys are cold.

You are right, there is no read disk button. Its just a newer version. I don't remember where, but there is a way to find the aspect ratio without that button, just look for it.

You are also right about the app not decoding commercial DVD's. That is why the tutorial asks you to download DVD43, which removes any DVD encryption before ripping the file.

For source, just browse to your (Drive):/Video_ts folder, and then make your destination desktop or something. If everything works like it is supposed to, you will see the "titles" (essentially the video files you want to copy) pop up in the little drop-down menu below the source selection menu.

I have had some problems getting some DVD's to rip, including All or Nothing. If you have 2 DVD players, try switching drives, that helped me.
