    DAMN KIDS/THIEVES!!!!

So I go outside and my truck is gone! I didn't have it in the garage b/c I've had some stuff from work taking alot of space up the last week. I call the police... while I'm filling out the report over the phone, the officer says... hold on! We might have just found your vehicle. She says I'll call you back. Sure enough, that was it. So in a 5 min span of finding my vehicle missing, the police had located it (that was the upside).

Now the bad part! IT WAS IN A POND! (Insert F bombs!) There's a few lakes / ponds surrounding my neighborhood. Apparently some kids thought my truck would be a good swimming companion. Then decided to pull out my navigation/head unit.

I was scheduled to go pick up the new duramax tomorrow as we've been waiting on the lift to get installed. This truck was getting traded in b/c the taxes were gonna kill me if I sold it to an individual. The deal was locked in, I had already paid for the lift and now this!

But heres the worst part! It might not even get totalled. I don't know if there's enough damage to total it, as the damage would have to equal $17,000. Water was into the cab, and according to my brick layer (who saw them pulling it out of the water) the water was up to my mirrors, but the truck was at a steep angle. I know the engine was totally submerged, and I heard the electronics clicking when I was looking into the truck. The front floorboards were totally soaked, but not the back. I don't know if the power seats are totalled or what, they were still working at the time. This is going to be a bad deal if they don't total this thing.

So we've had the good, the bad, and the worst parts. Now the dumbest part.... I left my keys in the ignition. It's habit... I have a garage and truck is normally in there. BUT I always lock it w/ the keys inside. I have a keypad that allows me in. I don't know how they could have got in, unless I didn't lock it, as the window wasn't busted.

The bright side to this whole thing is, one of my neighbors supposedly has a camera that might pick up part of my driveway (according to the police). I haven't asked around yet, but we'll see.

All this, a week before memorial weekend! Luckily almost all my friends have trucks w/ trailer hitches.

I am sure it will be totaled. Take your check to the dealer and enjoy your new Duramax, and get a dog....a big one.

I hope spharis! I was just kind of running the #'s in my head, and they had thrown out the 60% number. That's where the $17K came from. I was HOPING they would consider the wiring issue... and they prob. will. So we will see.

Have dogs... three of them (Two English setters and a border collie... but the BC is prob. gonna have to be put down this week).... time to trade the other two in though!...lol. So much for all that training. Looks like I trained them for the wrong thing... Sigh!

I'm sure it will be totaled too. Bright side of that is you will probably get more money then the trade-in value. I'm not too worried about the keys in the ignition either because my car was stolen from my garage with the keys in it. Adjuster said that she leaves her keys in her car in the driveway unlocked .

Now I'm concerned about my taxes. I got to talk w/ my CPA... I don't know if I'm gonna owe the gov. money (I depreciate my vehicles for work) if they total this truck or if there is a clause that gets me out. Guess that's what I pay her for.

Don't sweat the total, granted I have not seen the truck but my experience in the insurance industy is when you have a submerged vehicle (especially the way you have described) it is hard not to total the vehicle. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

Does your truck have a remote keyless entry (most newer trucks do)? The new trick out here (NJ) is kids and theives will hide near cars with some sort of scanner (don't ask my what type, I just hear it through insurance claims and am not an electronics guy) and when people unlock their cars they scan the frequency of the transmitter and are then able to unlock the car at a later time. The big places where this is happening are the gyms as people are usually there every day at the same time and generally park in the same locations so the theives can predict people's patterns and know how long they have to take a car. Keep your eyes open when out and about! And if you have somewhere you are on a daily basis try and change your patterns!

it's true they can scan electronically and then unlock your car. kicker is that if you have a code that changes all the time they can't scan that.

                    truck will be totalled!!

It's best they say to not lock your car and just leave keys in it, since if they steal it, and recover it, the harder they have to steal it, the more damage is done. If they want the car, they are gonna take it, might as well make it easy. I don't agree with that, but whatever. (I don't leave my z unlocked, or keys, I mean fob anywhere near it!!!)

                      Stealing Cars

It would seem very difficult to steal most of todays cars with security systems. Without the key close to the ignition the vehicle will not start. I tried this when I got a new key for my truck before I programmed the key into the system. The vehicle just crank and would not start.

About all that someone can do is tow the vehicle or steal the sound system. The ignition security is tied into the computer so even busting the steering column will not help.

The key microchips are a false security put in place by auto makers and insurance companies. It can be overidden with the proper tools in a few seconds. All you have to do is look at the sheer number of thefts of cars equipped with them (Escalades, Acuras, etc). GM began using them in 96, had one in a Camaro. What's funny is that I have a friend who had his vehicle stolen and the adjuster accused them of having it setup because the car was equiped with an ignition key imobilizer and those were "impossible to bypass". He had to hire a lawyer to recover his losses and dispute the fraud accusation by the insurance company.

The keypads are pretty easy to break. Usually only a matter of trying for a couple minutes. My dad is spooky good at cracking those codes. Gotta watch him around your bike locks too.

He's a locksmith, so he probably know some tricks though.

Our car got broken into and they popped the whole lock off with a crowbar. The driver side had no scratches on it the passenger side did, something tells me that guy was a noob.
