I walked by an E39 M5, 2000-2004, the other day and it had what appeared to be two side pipe looking tail pipes on each side of the car behind the rear wheels yet it still had the stock tail pipes exiting under the bumper. I've already been on the bimmer forum I belong to and they are stumped. Their best guess is a set of track pipes that can divert from the stock exhaust system when desired. I just did not know if anyone that follows some of the racing out there had ever seen a set-up at an SCCA event or anything. I will definitely keep an eye out the next time I decide to run the M3 at a track day.

No, I am not sure I could have seen anything anyways, it was lowered pretty far. Another guy on the bmw site said it could have beel blow-off plumbing for a remote turbo system some people have been putting in to keep the weight and heat away from the engine compartment. I don't know why it would have needed two side-pipes on each side though.
