Ok so i'm a bit late on this one having consumed by weekend beer quota with my neighbors and now awaiting pizza Napa Valley wines are some of the best in the world (in our humble opinions ) and it's only about a two hour drive to the wine country from my place. Makes for a nice weekend of tasting and great food in Calistoga, CA. Now i admit i'm not much of a wine drinker but i do enjoy the whole tasting process and an occasional good bottle at a nice eatery Can't drink reds (headache) myself but i do enjoy a good Chardonnay, White Zinfendel or an after dinner Gewürztraminer while eating out. But of course this only occurs when trying to impress somebody

So am I, it just helps to be able to describe why something tastes good. Notice I didn't use any of those words in my recommendations

BTW, there's really no big mystery about picking a good wine. It's all about the grapes and the conditions under which they are grown. Red is different from white. All wines must have the source of the majority of their grapes on the label.

I've found that Napa wines are generally overpriced. Russian River Valley and Alexander Valley usually produce good Cabs and Pinots. Don't underestimate the Columbia River Valley. Only 7 inches of rain a year means they have to augment with irrigation (read very controlled).

I'm still learning about French and Italian wines.

Of course, you can't go wrong with the Silver Oak Cab, but it's kinda pricey, too. For every day, try the Chateau St. Michelle Cab, Clos de Bois Pinot Noir.

If you want be a bit bolder, try some Texas wine. The Becker Claret, Grape Creek Cab, Sister Creek Cab, Travis Peak Duo Amis (white) or Super Texan.

We're spoiled with a couple of liquor stores in Austin that have an outstanding wine selection (Grapevine Market and Houston-based Specs).

I'm looking forward to Christmas dinner so I can open one of my Col Solare bottles.
Good Pics, I have had the Col Solare before, and liked it a lot. The Chateau St. Michelle is a staple in my collection.

I read an article in wine spectator a year or so ago that said the California, Texas and Missouri are the wine hot spots in the US. With MO being the second best, and Texas third. I think that is about right, we have some great wines from Mid Missouri...and some really crappy one's from around my area.

I prefer a red wine...Mostly Pinor Noir's, Syrahs, and shiraz's. Our "house" wine is Yellowtail Shiraz...it's good, but not overly impressive...the price is right though.

I really like Australian Wines, probably because they are known for there Shirazes.

Another brand that I reall like is Fat Bastard, it seems they have a really good handle on consistantly good wines.

Yea the Yellow Tail is cheap....4 bottles for like 23 or 25 bucks at Costco...Fat Bastard is fairly ok....I've had it a few times and have been less than impressed...if you like the Pinor Noir's then do yourself a favor and pick up a bottle of Willamette Valley Pinor Nior....that's all we are known for

Anybody alive out there? I think an eggnog is in order, warming up for Sunday night. A buddy is throwing his annual New Years gig and it's going to be a killer one! Just heard last night most of the guests are staying over and bringing motorhomes, trailers, etc. Last year it was a two day affair!

Vodka is the choice.....Elite is the name. Also if you are in the mood for a good cool vodka drink, have a trifecta which is one shot orange flavored vodka, one shot lemon flavored vodka and one shot raspberry flavored vodka and two shots of roses lime juice in a real cold martini glass........

Stop Light: one ounce of each layer in a martini glass. chill all Ingrediance.

                                1st layer is midori
2nd layer is pineapple juice and coconut rum
3rd layer is cranberry juice and vodka.

Pour each layer slowely down the edge of the glass.
