Hey Moki, what 51 is that? Looks like a Tuskegee paint job. You guys should be in Reno! I haven't heard yet, but I'm hoping for a 22 this year. Beyond that, I'm gonna have to get some shots up in the next week or so. All I've got is my 6meg point & shoot so I'll have to try and overcome quailty with content and composition. IT'S ON!
And no Air Race pictures? Seriously though, way cooler than any air show. As much as I like air shows, there's nothing like the races. If you guys ever decide to make the trip, I can hook it up.
Never been to an air race...although I bet they would be really cool to see. Do they just have prop planes that race? Couldnt imagine having jet races?
One thing is for sure, I get chillls when I hear any military jet roar.
It's this one. Val Halla. One of the real, real nice 51's around.
Moki,
THE NEXT EVENT!? It's next week. It has already started for me. I was poking around the airport (Stead Field) last Sunday and just happened to catch Blue Thunder , one of the sport class gold conteders, doing a run up of the new race motor. So in essence, it has already started for me. Our skies will be buzzing with the baddest race machines on the planet. Check here for the official start time.
Matt,
They do have a jet class. They are not nearly as fast (400+) as the Unlimiteds (500+) but they are still fun to watch. More info here. They are much, much tamer than the first impromptu jet race they staged a few years back. Word got out to stick around after the Unlimited gold race on Sunday (last race of the week) as something was going to happen. Nobody was saying what, just to stick around. After the trophy presentation and all that was winding down, the skies were filled with the sound jets, a sound usually reserved for air show acts. Those of us in know that were still hanging out wating for this "something" to happen were treated to one the most kickass races anyone had ever seen. A couple of smaller random jets (T-33 and something else I can't remember) and a bunch of Mig-15's tearing around the course in full after burner. From our vantage point, you could feel the heat from the 15ft. flames shooting out the back of 'em. Talk about intense. The next year we were introduced to the L-39 Albatross. A nice little sub-sonic trainer that looks much faster than it is. Still, fun to watch.

Man I would have loved to see that! That's a once in a lifetime experience. I have never see any type of air races here in Texas, only air shows.
My father has worked on a military base for about 26 years (still does) and we would always get a sneek peak of the Blue Angels practicing the day before the show...in fact me and my brother would ditch school just to go see them. We would also see all of the other jets and helicopters before the weekend crowd got there. I get so pumped about seeing military jets and helicopters (wanted to be a pilot in the Marine Corp) that I am like a kid in a candy store. In fact just yesterday I caught myself running outside of my house to hear a CH-46 flyby.
(BTW, the P-51 is my all time favorite WWII plane, damn they are beautiful!)
Anyway sorry for the hijack...lets see some more pictures!
