Once you improve upon the home, I definitely feel better because I know it was done right. Too many times I have bought a house only to find that the previous owners half-arsed it.

Mine was built in 1979... The ductwork has been moved from the foundation to the overhead spaces, but otherwise, it is "vintage" including the wallpaper and walnut panelling, and I am okay with that. Do it right, do it once, do it yourself...
A parallel I have to deal with is old boats. You would not believe all the damage caused by folks who cut corners, or even worse sometimes, thought they were doing the best thing in a situation to implement a repair or prevent further damage...It's not an optical illusion.
