      Talk about smok'n crack
IF the tranny has same gear ratio, either direction, the answer is maybe. Tranny also must be similarly robust for either rotation direction.

What he describes is more and more common these days. Volvo-Penta has a good tranny for stern drives that basically will allow this, same with a merc Bravo 1 outdrive.

the task being proposed is not out of the question, depending on a few things...

You know, all you have to do to f%^& a car up is to remove the rear-end and flip it such that drver's side wheel becomes passenger side. Reverse gear will now provide forward motion, and you have 4-speed automatic in reverse...

This is true, you can do that in a car, because the ring & pinion will still mesh the same, you are just moving the ring from the driver's side, to the pass side of the pinion. But to run a V-drive in "reverse" at cruising speed will not only be noisy due to gear cut, but would not last long IMO.

I think he is going through is @$$hole to get to his elbow.

Woops, I still need to be thinking inboard here. V-drive too...

Yeah, the thing would in effect be running on the backs of the gears, rather than on the faces, wouldn't it? Hmmm... Not so for an in-line 1:1 setup though...
no gears, just motor, tranny, shaft, and prop...

                wait....

1:1 tranny....... reverse would still have gear lash, like in a planetary setup...

!!!!! wow!!!! how the heck does he fly backwards? is the prop just dual direction? he has some mad skills!

yeah I saw that!! I was reading it last night. Pretty good! I like the definition of where the perfect placement for a nipple is.

I haven't had one open, but it still has to have a gear set to go in reverse. Not like an I/O with opposing ring gears that move back and forth to engage F and R on a stationary pinion that only rotates 1 direction.

I bet they use a planetary set and hold a sprag to get reverse. may work but not sure of longevity

Yeah, the electric park and indoor flyers now have reversing pitch props. You can control them from zero thrust to full thrust forward and almost full rear. Not full rear, due to shape of the prop.
