OKay, her we go. Look at the pic below. I cut a trapeziodal piece to fit in the cavity in the black object above. I Should have cut it at the thick black line to make a perfect fit. BUT, I cut it at the red line instead, which made the piece too short.
SO... I cut the green line. The green line removes material such that after cutting, the distance L1 is equal to L2, and the result is that the piece now fits. I have in all truth, cut the primary mating surface LONGER....
You see trim carpenters employing this on occasions where the little cut is not, or is just barely visible.
