So like if there was a planet like exactly 1 light year away, and it was somehow in geo-synchronous orbit with the earth. Put into the equation an infinitely large mirror on the face of that planet, and it was perpendicular to a line between that planet and the earth.
Finally, place in your hands an infinitely powerful telescope aimed at the mirror.
What you would see is the earth. Two years ago.
It's not an optical illusion.
It just looks like one.....

HAHA we talked about this in biology a bit last year....
If You could travel faster then the speed of light directly away from the earth and stop and look back at earth, could you see into the past? Watch the bombing of pearl harbor?

If I understand it correctly, no, you would see the time going by on earth very quickly into the future. You would be aging much more slowly, and experiencing time at your pace, but your pace of time, when viewed from earth, is extremely slow...

Put your hand on a hot stove for a minute, and it seems like an hour. Sit with a pretty girl for an hour, and it seems like a minute. THAT'S relativity. Albert Einstein

If you think about it, when we see a star we are actually seeing it as it was years ago...so the stars we see probably arent there anymore. Then back to the lightspeed traveling, you would be actually passing up the light reflect off the earth depending on how far you travel

48 hours, you ask. Put it this way. January 1, 2008 will begin at 12:01 a.m. somewhere in the world, (hint, International Date Line). For the next 24 hours, in each time zone, and exactly an hour apart, people will be counting down and yelling "happy New Year" until we get to the time zone right next to where it started. Then for the next 24 hours, the people in the last time zone to yell "Happy New Year" will still be living through their midnight hangovers, while in the time zone immediately to the west, everyone will be starting January 2.
the slightly more comment is best explained by the extra day each leap year...

If you were travelling away from the earth faster than the speed of light, the light from the earth that allowed you to see it could not catch up, and you would not even see it. Similarly, it is severely red-shifted if you are close to the speed of light, but just slower than it.
