My reasoning, the 4.3l block is notoriously thin-walled between the water and oil passages. When they freeze, they freeze to the inside, with no external indication; i.e. no cracks, no weeping, etc. Come spring-time, the thing runs... for a while, until the dipstick shows that the block is basically totally full of water, and there is no space in the crancase left for the rolling assembly, pistons, rods etc...

On my engine there are like 3 or 4 blue plugs you pull out and all the water drains out, yours is probably similiar
