I had some time to spend with some folks that mean a lot to me... Pretty cool.
Nice evening Saturday night, warm, lots of moon, nice night for a moonlight cruise. Almost needed a jacket, but not behind the windshield... The lights on the water were really pretty. It was about perfect, except for the one thing...
Why is it that there is always that one bonehead that insists on believing in his own stupidity that he is the only one on the water and that there is no need for nav lights????
Here I am, luckily completely sober, light load in the gas tank, trim tabs fully depolyed, bow trimmed all the way down, so I am able to run on plane at ony about 20MPH. Cruising along on total glass, no sense of motion, only the sound of the wind and the motor, (thru-hull exhaust switched off so quieter than normal)... All of the sudden, a white form emerges from the darkness, hard a starboard we go, missing the boat by like 40 feet. Then he turns on his anchor light....
What a bonehead... Dude risks his own life, the life of everyone else on his boat, plus the lives of everyone on my boat, and/or any other boat out there...
I might be inclined to turn off my nav lights sometimes.... BUT OFF IN A COVE IN A NO WAKE ZONE WELL OFF THE BEATEN PATH OF ALL BOAT TRAFFIC!!!! This guys was right out in the middle...
Right after that he fired up his anchor light. I hope he got the CHIT scared out of him, got a good @$$-chewing from anyone else on the boat, and got to clean up some brown stuff from the sole of the boat after he got back in off of the water...
My rant is done... How about you guys? It's not an optical illusion.
It just looks like one.....

I mean, this is Oklahoma, and there are a disproportional number of "redneck engineers" 'round here after all, but man.... I was scared, yet again... This has happened often. I have seen more than my fair share of attempts at compliance; spray painted bulbs and/or taped over bulbs wired to batteries... Similar rigs sliding off off the tops of sailboats, flashlights...
I have seen some people running at faster speeds than appropriate after dark. I am cabable of 60+ on a GPS. NOBODY should go that fast after dark but it is possible. You probably could not even see nav lights at that speed in time to react, but your chances if there are no lights is completely nill...
Take into account that as I said, I was going only 20, barely on plane, and I still got scared. If everybody just obeyed the law, (at least out in what might be considered the nav channel) it would be a lot safer.
Woops, I said I was off of my rant...It's not an optical illusion.
