IF I were to guess, there was either arc-ing which casues heat, or possibly the whole positive lug assembly was sitting in such a way to have all the juice going through a thin part of the wing nut, which could produce heat.
Often with rusty or corroded connections, (it happens a lot on my lawn tractor) you have a relatively small conductior where there shoud be a lot larger one. Heat due to current is a result.
It should be no big deal; tighten the wing nut and it should stay cool. It's not an optical illusion.

Off of the top of my head, that is really the only sensible answer and it makes total sense based on my experience. A fuse is just a thin section, calibrated to heat up to the point of melting at a certain current. You had a similar thing, only the wing nut was "Calibrated" for a little bit more current than you were pulling.
You tightened the wing nut right after starting the motor right? It's not an optical illusion.

Just in case, watch your voltage meter. If after starting, the battery connection was making, then breaking, then making... That might be what caused your alarm. If so, there is that remote chance you did some damage to your voltage regulator. Watch to make sure that you have an operating voltage higher than 12 with the engine running, yet lower than say 14.7 or 14.4 or so.
The effect I describe is similar to someone accidentally turning a battery switch past OFF going from one battery selection position to another, effectively removing the battery from the charging circuit. This can fry diodes in the voltage regulator.Last edited by philwsailz; 06-30-2008, 08:35 PM.It's not an optical illusion.
