what happens to a subwoofer if you have the pos and neg wires reversed?
In the very simplest of terms, it simply plays just like before. Nothing bad can or will happen only from this.
Now acoustically, it changes the phase of the woofers output by 180 degrees. Sometimes we purposefully play with the phase of woofers... Due to location, distance from the listening area, and other factors, it can sometimes be that the woofer's output is out of phase with the full range speaker's output at the listening location. Flipping the wiring can bring the woofer output "more in-line" with the output of the full range speakers, resulting in more sound around the crossover frequency.
Why do you ask?
It's not an optical illusion.

I ask because I still have have sub issue. it makes sound and vibration but stll no real movement. It is a moot point as I have a new sub on the way and a beautiful enclosure being made by my high school neighbor for a wood shop project. Just curious as to what made my old woofer stop thumping
When you push on it, (right in the middle) does it move smoothly or with resistance?
A woofer in a totally sealed box sometimes will not move much. The air in the box prevents it. A vented box playing a note at box resonance moves even less!!!!!
Still, everything you are telling me jsut makes me feel like the coil is somehow frozen in the motor... That is why I ask about pushing on it..

Right now there is no enclosure. The new one I am putting in will be in a sub box. I will push on it when i take it out this weekend to be replaced.
If the coil is frozen to the motor , does that mean the sub is toast?

If it is frozen, yes, totally, the woofer is toast.

Put your hand on a hot stove for a minute, and it seems like an hour. Sit with a pretty girl for an hour, and it seems like a minute. THAT'S relativity. Albert Einstein
