Ops, the stereo installers also forgot the FM antena in the boat. The service people at the dealership hooked me up yesterday.
They are so used to having one there in a car; it is way too easy to forget an antenna....

IT is also sometimes a challenge to get them into the boat where they will work. Sometimes you have to ground then to the block, sometimes to a raw water fitting, somtimes ungrounded if the H/U has a real ground... It can be real interesting.

A few years ago a boat I had actually had the best radio reception when I ran a length of coax cable (wikth the braided shield cut away) right down the middle of the bot, in the bilges, in top of the keel...
    It's not an optical illusion.
    It just looks like one.....

        HAH!!!!

Yeah, when I bought my place, I really did so with the logic that I was getting a great piece of land, with a killer shop. the house was a bonus...

We have a lot of land (not like you do ) but a lot of land for the most part. Eventually, I would like to put the boat in the backyard with a nice awning cover... But, that idea can be put on hold for now... The carport is working perfect.

It was about 12 feet as I recall. I used the coax with the shield on from the back of the radio down to where I wanted the center conductor to be exposed. From there the exposed copper was roughly 12 feet. MY theory which seemed to explain things was that the water outside the hull was somewhat electrically grounded to the head unit, and it formed sort of a dish as it were to help focus the signal to the wire.

I know, that analogy is probably pure crap, but whatever, it worked.

Antenna theory might as well be voodoo to me... Black magic... I cannot really get my arms around it, and when I win, it is pure luck in my opinion...

That was an awesome explanation Phil... I understood it and that is saying something.

But, I have about 15 feet of coaxial cable at home that I can us instead of the 3 feet of speaker wire that they used. Sounds like a modification is needed to me. Based on your idea, I should get HD radio via my non-had HU. he he he j/k But coaxial cable is going on tonight.

I am very, very happy. Just have to keep adjusting the base to get more out of it. IMO, I think I have too many high's and mids... Not enough base.

You will appreciate it I think if you take the time to find a chunk that has the motorolla (standard FM antenna) male connector, or use TV coax, but go to Radio Shack or some place like that and try to find an adaptor that will take a normal radio antenna connector and adapt it to the screw on tv-type connector.

Too many times, I have taken the wire and cut it in various goofy ways to make an unreliable connection when the proper goods were available a mile or two down the road.
