non-polar electrolytic capacitors...

They have proven to do an excellent job of shunting flyback voltage from solenoid-controlled devices; relays, pump solenoids, etc. They are placed parallel to the offending load. I know they also help absorb some of the spark for the switches for these devices, not unlike what they do in a breaker point ignition system. Based on that, my hunch is that were you to place a non-polar electrolytic in parallel to the fan, it should smooth things out and help to remove the buzzing noise from the power wiring.

The ones that work the best are sold as "bass blockers" at your local stereo shops....


They are sold in that context to be installed in series with your door speakers to limit low frequency energy. It helps keep the midrange cones from flopping and flapping from bass notes they cannot really reproduce.
