They have proven to do an excellent job of shunting flyback voltage from solenoid-controlled devices; relays, pump solenoids, etc. They are placed parallel to the offending load. I know they also help absorb some of the spark for the switches for these devices, not unlike what they do in a breaker point ignition system. Based on that, my hunch is that were you to place a non-polar electrolytic in parallel to the fan, it should smooth things out and help to remove the buzzing noise from the power wiring.Everything happens for a reason
