Final Coaches' Poll Breakdown

We were curious as to how some of the coaches voted in their final poll this year. At the end of the season we usually see coaches politicking and jockeying for better bowl position by promoting themselves and the other teams in their conference. But the more egregious sins are typically revealed when the coaches' poll is made public. Well, thanks to USA Today we have the results, and we're pretty sure Bob Stoops isn't going to like what he sees.

Here's a breakdown:

-Ohio State has only one loss, yet they received just 46 first place votes, while two-loss LSU got 11 and Oklahoma got two. Frank Beamer, Art Briles (Houston), and Pat Hill put Ohio State at #4, Steve Spurrier put them #5 and Mario Cristobal (Florida International) listed the Buckeyes #6.

-Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops obviously likes the Big 12, he put his Sooners #1, Missouri #3 and Kansas #4, while dropping LSU to #6, USC to #7 and Georgia to #8. Honestly, I don't know how the guy sleeps at night.

-Mario Cristobal also likes the Big 12, he had Oklahoma at #2, Missouri at #3, and Kansas at #4, all ahead of Ohio State at #6.

-Hal Mumme voted Hawaii #1.

-Bobby Bowden dropped Oklahoma to #10.

-Dennis Franchione had undefeated Hawaii at #22, while Texas Tech's Mike Leach had them at #17.

-Houston Nutt put three-loss Florida at #5 ahead of USC at #6.

-Dan Hawkins put three-loss Florida at #8 ahead of USC at #9, and put Kansas at #7 and Missouri at #5.

-Mack Brown had Georgia at #7.

-Bill Callahan had USC at #3 ahead of #4 LSU, while dropping Missouri and Kansas to #8 and #9.

-Howard Schnellenberger of Florida Atlantic put Kansas at #2, Hawaii #3, Boise State #10 Boston College #11 and USC #12. He also had Florida at #21. Schnellenberger is certainly our big winner of the "what the hell was he on?" award.

-Hilariously Ron Zook voted Illinois #9 and Florida #13.

-Colorado State's Sonny Lubick, Indiana's Bill Lynch and Eastern Michigan's Jeff Genyk must have been cheating off each other. They all had the same top six of #1 Ohio State, #2 LSU, #3 Oklahoma, #4 Georgia, #5 Virginia Tech and #6 USC. That order was consequently how the final poll ended up.

-Jim Tressel and his sweater vest may have the most respectable ballot. He had Ohio State #1, LSU #2, USC #3, Oklahoma #4, Virginia Tech #5, Georgia #6, Missouri #7 and Kansas #8.

So, our conclusion? Most coaches are freaking nuts. Examining this poll leads us to one of two conclusions: Either these guys don't watch other games, or they are just out to get their teams and those in their conference ranked as high as possible. Either way the coaches' poll is ridiculous and should be done away with.
