Highway mileage there - averaged 16.3 on a 195 mile trip

On the ride back w/ a polaris ranger in tow on a single axle trailer - 13.2 mpg.
Being a major OU fan and a staunch conservative.... I am perpetually vexed w/ the conundrum of who to hate more. Obama or the Univ. of Saxet.

Looks like Chevy beat out Ford on the fuel economy...good thing they put those 3.55 gears in the Ford

The Ford did win on towing mileage. I wonder what speed they were towing at, I would love to get 13+ mpg towing my boat. Of course the 10k lb trailer they were towing had no wind resistance either.

I'm a Ford guy yes. But with that said early on before the 2011s were out their website was boasting an incredible 20MPG. Now their website has changed since they are being used in the real world and only barely gettin 20% better, which is still quite impressive, but nothing near 20MPG.
          I get a whopping 9.0MPG in my 2008 6.4 when I pull my 8000lbs trailer. So I might see 10.5, maybe 11.0 with a 2011? I'll stick with my 2008, especially since I have 0% financing on it.
          Waiting for another good one!

My 2011 F350 gets right at 13.5 pulling my 24Ve with full and toys, coolers, etc. aboard. I towed it up from Oklahoma to Omaha, 400 miles and about 200 more in Nebraska since. It is running pretty consistently at that mileage when towing the boat.

This is all very interesting...I've been wanting to get an older (2000 ish) F250 with the 7.3L. I've had two friends with the 7.3L that say they get 20 mpg on the highway. But now the truth is coming out, I might reconsider. Did the 7.3L get better mpg than the 6.0 and 6.4?

My little Taco gets 20 on the highway and 14 towing (but my little boat weighs WAAAYY less than any of yours). Throw a hill in the mix and I'm at 11 mpg.

                Joe,

before I lifted my 2000 7.3 I could get 20 if I stayed at 70. Each diesel had it's own sweet spot. I would get 14-15 lifted towing my boat from cali to oklahoma doing 75, so.... each to their own.

I had a 21IR too btw... and when I hauled it back n forth across the nation it was fully loaded both the bed and the boat...

The 7.3 is considered a very good motor with good mileage and no problems to speak of, the 6.0 did okay on mileage but had some problems, the 6.4 no problems but not good mileage.

If you can keep your speed down, say around 60, I would imagine that the mileage on any of the Ford's would be good. When I am forced to do 60, the 6.7 gets in the 18 to 20 range. I just can't keep it there.

Thats good to hear...I tow at 60 max, I don't entirely trust my trailer, if you heard what happened to me last year (still kinda spooked every time I tow any trailer).

I'm just tossing around the idea of a towing/road trip vehicle and debating if the extra $$ to go Diesel vs Gas is worth it. But I do like the general consensus regarding the reliability of diesels over gas.

I used to tow with various gassers, they can tow well, especially if you get a heavier duty truck or truck frame SUV, but they are usually not as powerful, and you can tell when going up hill, or against the wind for a long haul (they will then be hard to keep at speed and use alot of fuel). But, diesels can be a pain in the a** in the winter, or noisy, and the fuel has cost more for the last three years.

That being said, if you do alot of towing, you will like having the diesel, they are made for it.

as long as my truck was plugged in I never had an issue in the cold, even down to 20 below....

Mine have always started, but I have gelled a few times - when in the 20 below range. I had to run on about double the fuel treatment with the 6.4. And when it is that cold, the truck never really warmed up enough to keep the cab comfortable when driving in town. Pushing snow it would get warm though!

The 6.7 has a fuel heating system that should help, it recirculates the fuel through a line to engine and back into the tank.

The 6.7L should get quite a bit better then the 6.4L, its got 1 less turbo and a lot more torque so the less the turbo is on the better mileage it will get. that was the problem then had when they dropped the 7.3 and went to the 6.0L and 6.4L they dropped torque a bit and used more turbo.

20% increase isn't anything to shake a stick at, but it certainly isn't the 20+MPG they were boasting before the 2011's hit the sales floor.

I heard that the test track that they took reviewers on has a slight down grade for it's entire length, and that scewed the mileage.
