First you turn the unit on and set your speed...pretty sure the one I had held memory. Drive it up to speed, when it beeps its kicked in and takes over.

When you slow down it turns off and is ready to go for the next run!

On my boat if you had it on and cycled the ignition it came back to the last setting, so it was ready to go.
