I am deeply saddened by Connecticut event last week. At the same time I am on the verge of needing to hop on a soapbox!
Let me ask my gun-owning friends here. A semi-automatic rifle is a semi-automotic rifle, right? Same thing for a pistol? I got a semi-auto Ruger? Is that an assault pistol? What if I put wood grips on it??? Hell, every pistol I know of is technically semi-auto...
My point in asking is that I just read a headline that said they were going to introduce legislation banning assault rifles.
To my understanding an assault rifle is an assault rifle by styling only. I can but a nice wood-stock semi-automatic hunting rifle that is just as deadly with the same number of rounds chambered as the black and/or camo "Rambo" gun that looks like the sinister drug cartel guy would carry. Am I right? Is it that simple or is there more of a gray area?
To me with my current understanding, it is kind of like outlawing brown Chevy trucks becuase more people have been run over by them. If they get rid of the brown ones, what will be the next color on the critical list? Gray?
Someone here correct me if my perception is wrong. I know there is some gray area, but I am not stupid and I think my logic is close to sound and largely acurate. It's not an optical illusion.
It just looks like one.....

When I think assault rifle, I think high capacity magazine's personally. Most guns with a magazine are semi-auto. I don't know a lot about guns but doesn't the shape of the bullet of the .223 round cause the bullet to tumble on impact for maximum tissue damage? The long shape with a heavy butt lends itself to that. Just asking questions, not an expert.

Still, I go back to the classic maxim. If you outlaw something, only outlaws will have it. And the other maxim, guns don't kill people, people kill people.
Put those together and you will always have a sitaution where sick people can get their hands on gear to inflict serious damage.
Not sure how to skin this cat, but jacking with the 2nd Ammendment is not gonna solve the problem. It's not an optical illusion.

The guns don't kill people, people kill people is the classic argument and it's true. If we as a society want to keep that 2nd amendment right, we better think of a way to make sure that the mentally ill aren't getting those guns or else we are going to lose some or all of it at some point because that argument starts losing it's power shooting after mass shooting.
