I hope that helps you feel safer. I went through that after someone kicked our door in at 2am, there was not enough time to get the gun out as I kept it locked up due to the kids. I also have a Concealed permit but don't carry it anymore. In the end it didn't make me feel safer.
In class we were taught to keep our home defense shotgun loaded. As well as our Concealed Carry Pistol. We don't have any children.Of Course a gun is a last resort for protection and would only be used after we had retreated to our safe room.

IMO, the front door is the 2nd to last resort.....they kick it in, om not hesitating to let off a couple rounds.

In our class that was one of the biggest mistakes people make.Buying a gun thats too big for their hand.
Yep. You may get off one shot, but if the grip is too large, you may no longer have a good grip and therefore cant aim for a 2nd shot. Too small and you get bit by the slide

They taught us to retreat to the bedroom and have a foot lock on the door. Then if the alarm and a second locked door doesn't stop them stop them from harming you or your family.

One woman in our class had bought a air lite 380.It was very light and had a very short barrel with lots of recoil.

A 380 is a great gun for a females small hand, but some ive held where too small for me.

We just got a Remington 870 youth 20 gauge for the home. It's a gun both Shirley and i can handle easily.
Keep the magazine loaded but not one in the chamber. Everyone knows the sound of you racking that shotgun to load one in the chamber. That sound alone will make most get the heck out of the house.

Most recognizable sound in the world.

I forget it's just you two. We live in a one level house and when the door got kicked in and being sound asleep there was little time to react. We don't live in fear anymore but if it happened again they better come better prepared.
Yeah, its a big handle. I will probably settle for something that fits the wifes hands better.
My wife and I have the same problem with grips and size. Check out the Smith and Wesson M&P series. You can change the grips to fit your hands. Looking at one for the wife after her ccp. She needs one for work.
