I know the history of VI, weights, etc.
I'm mostly curious why Rotella and Delo say its for heavy duty diesel engines and no mention of gasoline engines.
For instance, the Royal Purple says diesel AND gasoline...

Rotella does with the specs on the back. They just dont say you can put this in your engine VIA the oil cap lol.. I mean food dont say this is ment for a human mouth! Some companys just assume if your buying there product its via the oil specs and ratings

they dood at royal purple said he would run there 10w-40. He said its got better goodies in the oil =) not to mention it will flow a little better cold.

I took the easy route and just followed WABoating's exhaustive research on oil to meet PCM's recommendations. The only commonly available oil he could find that exactly matched them was Rotella T 15W-40. So that's what I went with.

After more research, it looks like the "diesel" designation is only an advertising ploy. It also appears that there IS a difference in viscosity between a 15w-40 and a 10w-40 even in above 0F degree weather too...

From my PCM manual:

Engine Oil Requirements
The following chart shows the recommended oil viscosity
for various ambient temperature ranges:
Prevailing Ambient Recommended A.P.I.
Temperature Classification & Viscosity
Above 50˚F SAE 15W-40 “GF-4/SM”
Below 50˚F SAE 5W-30 “GF-4/SM”
IMPORTANT: The use of oils which contain “solid”
additives, non-detergent oils or low quality oils
specifically are not recommended

usually it is just a little hotter than 50 deg F here, so I just run the 15W-40

Dear GJ,

Zinc levels are being lowered on almost all engine oils, but the heavy duty diesel engine oils, such as the Rotella T, will continue to have higher levels than the passenger car/gasoline engine oils. The Rotella T 15W-40 meets API SL, SJ, SH and all previous specifications for gasoline engines. Although the amount of zinc is decreasing, the wear protection will continue to be as good or better than the previous formulations. We are just using different chemistries in the additive package. The 15W-40 viscosity is heavier than what is recommended for most gasoline engines, but if you feel comfortable with it, then there should be no problem. Rotella T 15W-40 is recommended for and used in many mixed fleet applications. It does have a higher antiwear level to protect the heavy duty diesel engines and should give you very good performance in this regard.

Yes, and even further research shows that ALL 15W-40 "diesel" oil is simply HDEO.
Marine engines require HDEO because they are often worked harder (ie WOT)




another interesting contradiction I just found in the Indmar manual:

a short paragraph:
Indmar recommend Pennzoil Marine 15W-40 oil in all engines except the 8.1L which uses SAE 40W and the LS series which use Mobile 1 5W-30."

I'm gonna just call Indmar and straighten these contradictions out...
