That is the reason. Since we have less oxygen, less chance of knock/ignition/detonation. Lower octane = more energy content per gallon, higher octane = less energy content but allows you to run more timing on the engine due to it not detonating as early which means your engine has the potential to make more horsepower.

So any one buying octane booster is wasting their money unless they advance their timing and would have to always use it.

Depends. If the engine is not running properly, then no. I guess I should say that a proper running engine doesn't need higher than recommended unless the mfr states that running higher octane will give you some benefit.

Well we have already dropped 5k or so into the stereo what's a few hundred more... My bro decided not to put all 4 subs in his boat so the stuff is just chilling in my garage. So the cost will be minimal.
