I'll probably be retired by the time we get those nice new birds. It will be almost 20 years since the first order for the 767 tanker when we finally get some. I was told as an Lt that I would fly one. Too bad it got screwed up by corruption in our procurement process.

Too bad planes take so long now to make, here is progress for you, from Wikipedia, but this is true about the P-51. It was 6 months since the order for a long range fighter to escort bombers and the plane was in production.
It was conceived, designed and built by North American Aviation (NAA), under the direction of lead engineer Edgar Schmued, in response to a specification issued directly to NAA by the British Purchasing Commission; the prototype NA-73X airframe was rolled out, although without an engine, 102 days after the contract was signed.[2]
