    The idle air control valve controls idle air. Actually I have no idea.

      that's exactly what it does! It controls the amount of air the engine is getting at idle so when you turn on the A/C or the engine is cold, it bumps up the idle a little bit to compensate for the load.

            Yep let's air past the throttle plate as it's closed. It usually a eltric motor the can adjust how far open/closed dependig on demands for higher/lower idle.
