I used to do field service for CNC machine tools. When something mechanical broke you called the machine builder, if the controller had problems you called the control builder. The machine builder knew someting about the controller, but the controll builder knew it inside and out.
Not much different that a boat builder's and an engine builder's relationship.

Boat manufacturers, especially inboard, are more like boat assemblers. But unlike the auto industry most parts manufactured by a 3rd party and adapted to their marine application.
