Just do it without consulting the wife. When she finds out, try to play the "It was going to be your birthday surprise!" card. I'm sure she'll love you for it.

My first car that I bought was a Red '92 Duster. I personally don't care for red. However, it was low miles, great condition, worked for me, and was a great price. People couldn't understand how I could've bought a car of a color that I did not like. Well it did what it needed to do, got me to school and work. It was easy to over look the color, at least for me.
