I have done some open house's for work, similar to a trade show and you've got the really slow days, the up and down, and the busy all the time.

Busy all the time is nice so the time flys.

I haven't done woodbadge yet. I have wanted to but it just hasn't fallen into place yet. 20 years good job. I have done about 8 years. The group that I am working with now think it is mainly a babysitting service. My assistants and I are really excited for scouts and have tried to get the scouts to plan fun activities but can't get any commitments. You gotta love when you when you take time off work and the scouts plan an activity and then none of them show up. It is better than when I started I had a total defunct troop. We have 26 scouts / parents going to our winter camp this coming weekend. For us that is a lot. Now if it is planned and the scouts don't go I still go with my boy and my assistant and his son. They are starting to get there but there isn't much parental support. We also have parents with the mentality that everyone should be an Eagle or get any award whether they work for it or not. That doesn't fly so well with me. Not everyone can be in 1st place or own a Tige.

You need to lay down the law and make attending meeting and activities part of earning the advancements. Make this clear to the boys as well as their parent as a special meeting or Court of Honor. Tell them straight up, if your kid dont attend meetings and outings, they will not advance.

Next, tell them that the BSA is a boy lead program and that you as adults are there to guide, teach and support the young men, not baby sit them. You may piss of a few parents, but in the end, those are the ones tha needed pissing off

Make the time to take Woodbadge, it was a blast. Great learning experience, even after I had been a leader for 10 yrs.

Had a chance today to meet the Dr (and Mrs Dr), have a couple beers, and chat. Nice people. Now I owe him a couple beers someday

Agree 100%. I have already pissed off some. Before me they were just handing stuff out. There is one kid that is in the Varsity's working on his Eagle Project, well his parents are, and he doesn't even know the Oath. If one Merit Badge counselor is hard, makes them do the requirements, they find one that doesn't. Drives me nuts. WTH?? The unit commissioner does not agree with your and my thinking. Which makes it hard. I think it is funny every time I am asked what I have planned and I tell them that I don't plan it is the boys program and they plan. I also believe and have seen that if they fail to plan the next time they won't let it happen. Some of the parents and unit leader commissioner think I need to have a back up plan just in case. All that teaches it that they don't have to do anything because I will have something. Better that they learn these values now rather than try to learn it later in life.

I am lucky to get one or two parents to the COH's.

In the end I love the Scouting program and enjoy working with the ones that want to be there. Some great times.
