Got a lot of work done on the sailboat this weekend. I took two winches off of the parts boat, disassembled and rebuilt them. These things have a little wear from light use, but otherwise look about right for the boat. Had I bought them on th used market, I would have paid about what I paid for the parts boat, so I am even-money on that deal already.
Drlled holes *gasp* through the cabin top where they go, and went through my standard mounting hole procedure. Boats are cored in lots of places, and when you drill, you drill through wood. FOr deck hardware, best practice is to drill an oversized hole, then with a bent nail or an allen wrench in a power drill, remove a little more of the wood core around the inside of the hole. Tape it off on the inside, and fill with thickened epoxy. When cured you can re-drill a proper sized hole through the epoxy without hitting wood. This will keep your core dry. As a further step, we go in and countersink all the drilled holes. the idea is to use enough bedding sealant, (in my case butyl tape) to totally fill the counter sink. Then when you tighten the fittings, the pressure squeeazes the sealaant compound down into the countersink ensuring a 2-axis compression seal.
I also marked, drilled and filled for one of the triple rope clutches, this one the starboard clutch that will manage the main halyard, the cunningham, and the reefing system.
I mounted a new bushing in THE CORRECT PLACE for the tiller pilot. A PO had installed one, but had put it in the wrong place. His installation would allow the boat to tack, steer and correct to starboard only. He installed the bushing too close to the centerline of the boat so that when the tiller was centered the ram was totally retracted. No ability to go to port....
Finally I marked up, trimmed and fitted the old chitty carpets for the interior as templates for some brand new mats. I have an industry contact who is helping me with making some brand new bound rubber-backed mats. They will be just like new boat mats, from same supplier as many use. Too fun!Attached Files- Photo590.jpg (70.5 KB, 22 views)

Yeah, I know those bolts are too long. I need to get 1.25" bolts today to install the winches. Those bolts hown come from the old isntallation where they went through a fiberglass deck AND a thick hunk of teak cockpit trim....
The proper installation will have a fender washer, then a lock washer, and finally an acorn nut that covers the end of the bolt leaving a round and relatively smooth surface so you don't accidentally cut your head..It's not an optical illusion.

Two speed winches are the way to go. They make life much easier as the wind gets heavier. The luck is gone, the brain is shot, but the liquor we still got.

I have my new lines arriving tomorrow... I need to get new masthead sheaves ordered, stat! Pitching the old wire halyards in favor of new low-stretch all-line halyards. Need to make saure sheaves are compatible...It's not an optical illusion.
