Yep, about a million years before the Rockies were formed. And we have a river that runs North too. And it's older then your Snake River

I have been down bowls and just steep challenging trails all over the east coast and my west coast experience is Mammoth, June, Park City, The Canyons and Snowbird. My personal experience is that double black diamonds in the east are WAY more scary to crash on and require greater edge control in sloppy slush or ice conditions (the norm). I have never had "bad east coast" conditions on the western mountains I have been on. The snow is much softer, deeper and more forgiving out west so even though the trails might be steeper, they are easier to ride and more fun. Eventually I will probably turn into a snow snob out here and hide in the lodge when the conditions, ahem, suck, but not yet, even when the "locals" complain about horrible conditions, I am loving it. This is my own personal experience but I'm sure many east coast transplants feel the same way.

BTW, I was born and raised night skiing in PA because it was a cheaper lift ticket. I will never go night skiing again if I can help it, regular choppy ice turns into skating rink ice at night, not fun. I did learn the importance of properly tuned edges and I do all my own edge fixing, tuning and base repair.

I hear ya, there are not many places to hike out east either, just northern VT, NH and ME have enough snow and nice bowls to hike and ride through the trees. I am mostly referring to trails you can reach on a chairlift. I usually ride with my wife, I taught her how to ride in college. I don't normally take her on double blacks on the east coast unless I ride them first and check out the conditions but out west on all our trips I have no reservations about taking her down them.
