Did they have any more info on the news? I was trying to figure out where on the trail the mom and kid stopped. I guess it was probably just below the crest of a hill where you should never stop unless the kid had fallen there. Also not sure how the impact killed the 2, just wrong place, wrong time I guess, and it doesn't sound like a helmet would have helped but you never know.

I started wearing a helmet a few years ago after a scary crash I had in a bowl on mammoth mountain.

I was just reading in the discussion in the Casper paper website and there were some witnesses that posted up.
The Young girl was five and had been skiing for 3 years. They were on the double black diamond run and the little girl fell. she was a capable skier they say. They were in the middle of the run which is a very wide section. when the young man who everyone describes as a very good kid and accomplished snow boarder came out of the trees at a very high rate of speed,40-45mph??? they say it looked like he did not see them there in the middle of the run for some reason as he made no effort to avoid them. he must have been looking back or....
They said The slope was very icy also
It is just a very sad and tragic story

In my younger days I was racing a friend down the hill and a new snowboarder was up ahead learning with a friend. They were close to the inside of a turn and I had planned to pass by them with about 5' to spare. At the last second the newbie fell and rolled and stood up right in front of me. I couldn't turn out of the way so I laid the board and myself down and skidded as I hit him. My board hit his board and he went for a flying flip over me and landed on his a$$. Luckily neither of us was hurt and my friend who I was racing saw it and started laughing so hard he fell down too. I learned to give people lots of room after that and not to race around if the trails get busy.

The link above tells the story. Apparently, the girl was wearing a helmet and was a pretty good skier. She fell, mom was helping her up and the snowboarder came out of the trees and hit them. She had been skiing since she was 2. That is why I was so interested in the story, I'm starting to teach my 2YO right now. Skis for now, hopefully snowboards later but I won't force it on her.

I'm always trying to kill the bad snowboarder image, i always stop to help skiers who fall, especially if they have a long yardsale and I can grab the gear uphill and bring it down to them. Like I said above, I was a stupid kid once and that behavior is not exclusive to snowbaorders, but I just try to show anyone who is watching that not all snowbaorders are pot smoking dirt bags.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot, double blacks out west are easier than double blacks on the east coast. They have NO idea what ice is out here, and when the fresh stuff falls its like heaven.

The only place I have ever skied is Paoli Peaks in southern Indiana. It is really just a big hill with man made snow. Very Icy. I would love to ski some real snow.

So true! Here, most of the base is man-made, so it's nothing more then ice crystals. Then you get the temp cycles that melt the snow during the day, then refreeze during the night.

Under those conditions, even a bunny slope will seem like the Olympic down hill
