Found out my wife's van doesn't need a new transmission! Aamco said it was shot and needed a rebuild for $1850. Nope, just needed to tell the powertrain control module to do a "quick learn".
Awesome!
The luck is gone, the brain is shot, but the liquor we still got.

I guess I'm going to have words with aamco tomorrow, as they charged me to tell me it was bad. I even asked if they should flash the PCU. They said "no". Rebuild was my only option and that I should not drive the van at all. Can you say "working on commission"?

Shrug I work at a shop and we always suggest a re-flash and/or a flush and filter before a replacement we just let the person know upfront it still may not fix the trans...

They did warn me that a flush may make it worse. They said they wouldn't even try.
The error code they that was pulled, "Battery disconnected" clears the PCU of what it has learned.
Besides they said the transmission was slipping in first gear. If it was slipping, why can I still break the tires loose at a stop sign.
The symptom I brought it in for was a harsh 3 to 2 downshift at 25 mph. That is usually what happens after a flush/fill, or so the internet tells me. It also tells me a re-flash will remedy that.

If the fluid is dark/burnt smelling I would not suggest the flush... Trans fluid is highly detergent and the clutch pack material (if it is worn) what is left of the material will be "washed" away by the new clean fluid and can cause it to slip worse.
A harsh 3-2 down shift is rarely a worn trans... a Slipping up shift or car just does not go into gear... thats a worn out trans.
Most harsh down shift are software issues ( at least the cars I deal with BMW's only)
