If it were real wood,you could use a methylene-chloride -based stripper, but that will eat the laminate, since it is a phenolic...It's not an optical illusion.

You could try one of those soy or citrus-based strippers; something tells me it might not damage the laminate....It's not an optical illusion.
It just looks like one.....
