Power supply is usually a catastrophic failure. Like you will be playing and POW! its toast. Then when you power on you will get the YLOD. But how to tell if its a power supply is by if the fan turns on or not.

Because If it does start up and play, then turn off, I would say his solder on the GPU or CPU is on its way out. Because It expands as it heats up and its just enough to cause a problem, but not enough to cause a problem from a cold start.

there really seems to be a lot of issues with the PS3's... mine better not act up

I've not had a single issue with any of mine....and one of them is the first generation units. My dad has 4 or 5 and has only one with a problem...it won't read/play the discs...

Well the thing is you hear about all the broken ones, not the ones that work fine. My 20gb lasted 4 years.

Xbox 360 fail rate is like 50% and ps3 is about 10%

Plus I have done enough research and troubleshooting on these that I know them inside and out.
