Yours too? Seems like this phenomenon is becoming more common.
The luck is gone, the brain is shot, but the liquor we still got.

Left the diaper bag at the grandparents yesterday. Gotta dry a 50 mile round trip today just to go get it.

So, when I got to the lake Saturday morning, I had 800 lbs of quick-crete and 2 4x4x12 timers in teh back of my truck. There was still some old structure I was considering keeping, but alas it all came out. I started by ripping out the rest of the bad old wood, then got busy sistering in a big 2x10. Had to run my skill saw as a dadoe cutter to notch one of the big 5x5 posts. That took a while. Then I was post-hole digging for a pier/railing support, farily close to waters edge, and ended up punching through under tha bank. Luckily I had a 4-foot concrete tube form handy, but have you ever dug a foot-diameter hole 4-feet deep with only post hole diggers? That about un-did me..

I pulled out the old creosote telephone pole retaining wall, and re-bedded it, driving spikes and connecting deadmen to hold it back and tie it all back together, way more solid than before. The retaining wall used to suport the old deck, but after a flood, it was compromised pretty badly, and the deck ended up holding the retaining wall up. That was scary, but no more! My 2x10 footers are pinned well at the corners, so anything resting on the retaining wall now is mre just along for the ride. Braced, and crossbraced the underneatch sides, and then layed the 2x6 joists. Some of the cross-tying made for some funny angles, so not every joist is on 16, but if they aren't, on 16, they will be narrower. I like to build decks that can handle parked cars.....

Here are some pics, shot in order, mostly showing what I described above. Needless to say I am sore, and have a lot more to go, but 3 of the 6 big 5x5 posts that will support the roof are firmly and solidly in place!

                                Enjoy!
