I had a '99. Sold it and bought a '11 diesel Jetta.
I have a gas 2.5L 2008 Jetta. One of the guys at work has a 2010 Diesel Jetta. Last year we tracked our mpg and I got 30, he got 40. The price of gas vs diesel at the time had me paying 11.5 cents/mile and he paid 11.0 cents per mile. So he saved .005 cents per mile with his diesel. If you figure out the additional cost of the diesel engine option, about 3,000 on the current model year, it would take 600,000 miles of driving to make up for the cost of the diesel.
However, that is thinking that there will always be the same price difference in the fuels. If the US can increase production of diesel and find some savings with the economy of scale, then the diesel price may come down and it would be worth it to drive the vehicle with the better mpg.

We still need to find somewhere. I held off because of work and now the campsites are gone at Pueblo. So unless we stay in a hotel we might be looking for different options. I am going to try and drive up and check out grayrocks and glendo.

Alcova is an hr and a half further. I can probably get a big enough spot for two.
