Makes your standard ferrous magnets look like big wimps in comparison.

Rare earth metals have been found to have some unusual properties and have been used recently in a lot of high-tech stuff. There are only two locations in the world that have been commercially mined - one in California near the border with NV, and one in China. The US mine had stopped production about 12 years ago due to environmental compliance issues and Chinese prices. But, since they are so often used in high-tech things, recently the US gov't realized that it was not a good idea to rely upon a supply from China for all our military technology raw materials. So the US mine is gearing up to start production again.
