30 wt oil in the crank case, and they actually recommend marvel mystery oil be used occasionally in the spark plug holes as ring maintenanceIt's not an optical illusion.
It just looks like one.....

I am really not sure technically how they differ, but they do not sit on top of the motor, so I guess there is a benefit in case of a stuck float; you don't fill your motor with fuelIt's not an optical illusion.

just seems so odd in a boat application where id think youd want the air intake as far vertical as possible.

The brass plug just below and aft of the carb is the drain for the crankcase. There is a mod for this also, which provides a long tube that is permanently installed there, and led to a convenient point of access. Then you connect to the tube with a vacuum tank to suck the oil from teh pan....
The oil dipstick is back behind the head, over by the water pump. That is hard to get to in most installations as well.... yes, a mod is available too....It's not an optical illusion.

Ther eis a modification that uses a more moder PCV systm to provide a more positive means of burning the crankcase gasses to keeep that smell out of the boat interior
For one so little, that seems like a fairly complicated set up.
